Railway and port coal transportation expected to achieve "over 50%" in both areas.

From January to May this year, China's total electricity consumption reached 2.66 trillion kilowatt-hours, representing a year-on-year increase of 9.8%. This growth rate was 3.4 percentage points higher than the same period last year, reflecting continued momentum in both power generation and thermal power output. Additionally, coal consumption for power generation nationwide during the same period totaled 870 million tons—up 90.56 million tons, or 12% year-on-year—a growth rate that remains among the highest seen since 2011.

From January to May this year, China's total electricity consumption reached 2.66 trillion kilowatt-hours, representing a year-on-year increase of 9.8%. This growth rate was 3.4 percentage points higher than the same period last year, reflecting continued momentum in both power generation and thermal power output. Additionally, coal consumption for power generation across the country totaled 870 million tons from January to May, up 90.56 million tons—or 12%—compared to the same period last year, marking the highest growth rate since 2011.

In the first half of this year, the economy maintained a steady and positive growth trajectory, driving a rapid increase in energy demand, with notable rises in consumption of energy commodities such as coal and electricity.

In the first half of the year, China's coastal coal transportation maintained a robust growth momentum, with increased downstream coal consumption and heightened enthusiasm among shippers. Meanwhile, advanced production capacity in the upstream regions was being rapidly released, as coal enterprises in the "Three West" areas stepped up both production and sales. Railways and ports worked together to optimize operations and accelerate shipments, resulting in a market scenario characterized by high supply, strong transportation activity, and robust demand for coal.

Since the beginning of this year, China’s national economy has continued its steady and positive development trend, with structural upgrades advancing steadily, quality and efficiency improving continuously, and the economy getting off to a strong start. Meanwhile, China’s coastal coal transportation market has followed a pattern of initial decline followed by recovery, gaining momentum in the latter part of the quarter. After a sluggish performance in February and March, daily coal consumption at power plants gradually rebounded to moderately high levels starting in April. Coupled with staggered production schedules in industries like cement, which boosted overall coal demand, the coal market has begun to show signs of improvement. To meet growing downstream coal needs, ports around the Bohai Sea region have strengthened coordination with mining, railway, shipping, and power sectors, increasing the volume of high-quality coal resources being brought in. These ports are working tirelessly to maximize unloading and expedite loading operations, ensuring timely supply to meet customer demands. As a result, coal throughput continues to grow steadily. From January to May this year, maritime coal imports into China’s southeastern coastal and Yangtze River regions increased by approximately 20 million tons compared to the same period last year—of which, 60% of the growth came from ports in the Bohai Sea region.

In June, despite multiple port closures caused by adverse weather conditions such as strong winds, coal transportation remained robust. For the first half of the year, it’s projected that the nine major Bohai Rim ports will handle and ship 348 million tons of coal—representing a year-on-year increase of 20 million tons. With more than half of the year already underway, meeting or even surpassing this ambitious target is well within reach. Notably, among the nine key coal-handling ports in the Bohai Rim region, all except Tianjin Port have continued to see year-on-year growth in coal throughput.
