The Sunan Along-the-River Railway, long-awaited by residents of cities along the route such as Jiangyin, Zhangjiagang, Changshu, and Taicang, finally has a concrete timeline. At a recent Suzhou City Railway Promotion Meeting, it was announced that the provincial Party committee and provincial government have explicitly set the construction start date: the railway will break ground by September 28. Earlier environmental impact assessment (EIA) public notices indicated the project is expected to take 42 months to complete in total.
The Sunan Along-the-River Railway, long-awaited by residents of cities along the route—including Jiangyin, Zhangjiagang, Changshu, and Taicang—finally has a timetable. At a recent Suzhou Railway Promotion Meeting, officials announced that the provincial Party Committee and provincial government have explicitly set the construction start date: the railway will break ground by September 28. Earlier environmental impact assessment (EIA) public notices indicated the project is expected to take 42 months to complete in total.
"The 'Second Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Line'—these areas will soon enter the high-speed rail era."
The Sunan Along-the-River Railway, designed for a top speed of 350 km/h, starts at Nanjing South Station and travels through Nanjing City, Jurong City, Changzhou City, Jiangyin City, Zhangjiagang City, Changshu City, and Taicang City. After reaching Taicang Station, it connects to the Shanghai hub via the Hutong Railway.
Notably, the high-speed railway line features a total of nine passenger stations along its entire route: Nanjing South Station, Jiangning Station, Jurong Station, Jintan Station, Wujin Station, Jiangyin Station, Zhangjiagang Station, Changshu Station, and Taicang Station. Among these, Jiangning Station will be rebuilt as a combined station with the existing Ninghang Passenger Dedicated Line; Jurong Station, Jintan Station, and Wujin Station are newly constructed. Jiangyin Station will be built as a new station integrated with the existing Xin-Chang Railway, while Zhangjiagang Station, Changshu Station, and Taicang Station will be newly established as combined stations alongside the under-construction Hutong Railway.
The planned Sunan Yangtze River Railway will pass through one of the regions in our province and the Yangtze River Delta area with the highest concentration of cities, the most advanced level of urban-rural integration, and a solid foundation for economic and social development. It will also become the second intercity railway along the Shanghai corridor. Notably, the four cities—Jiangyin, Zhangjiagang, Changshu, and Taicang—which currently lack high-speed rail connections, all rank among the top 10 "National Top 100 Counties (Cities)" in terms of overall strength.
"Sky Rail" features 95% of its railway line built entirely on elevated bridges.
This high-speed railway is also an "aerial expressway" primarily composed of extra-large and medium-to-large bridges, seamlessly connecting them across the landscape. A total of 42 new extra-large and medium-to-large bridges have been constructed along the main line, spanning a combined length of 264.8 kilometers—accounting for 95% of the entire mainline route. Additionally, the project includes an 850-meter-long single-bore, twin-track tunnel.
In the future, high-speed trains will whiz through the air, allowing passengers to enjoy breathtaking scenery along the way. It’s reported that the southern Jiangsu Yangtze River High-Speed Railway route is dotted with numerous scenic and tourism attractions, including the Maoshan Scenic Area, Chishan Lake Wetland Park, Jiulongshan Scenic Area, and Changdang Lake Tourist Resort—making it easy to reach these picturesque spots while traveling aboard this cutting-edge train.
Buses depart approximately every 3 minutes; board from the south-side platform at Nanjing South Station.
Once the South Jiangsu Along-the-River Railway is completed, it will operate entirely with high-speed train sets, with trains departing at intervals of just about 3 minutes. So, where will passengers traveling from Nanjing to destinations along the route—such as Jiangyin and Zhangjiagang—eventually board their trains? According to the previously released environmental impact assessment announcement, the railway line will connect to the Nanjing South Station’s Ning’an Yard (the southern platform) via the Ning’an-Hurong connecting line, linking it to two existing arrival/departure tracks in the Hurong Yard. Additionally, the station’s Shanghai-end throat area will undergo reconstruction. Notably, the overall scale of Nanjing South Station will remain unchanged. After departing from Nanjing South Station, the railway will first cross Shuanglong Avenue and then span the Qinhuai River before aligning with the existing Ninghang High-Speed Railway at its Jiangning Station, effectively co-locating the new line within the same station complex. The railway’s alignment will run between the current Ninghang High-Speed Railway and the Ninghang Expressway.
Direct access to Pudong: Residents along the route will soon be able to reach Pudong directly via high-speed rail.
Since the South Jiangsu Yangtze River Railway will utilize the under-construction Hutong Railway in Taicang to connect into the Shanghai hub, and the second phase of the Hutong Railway is planned to directly link to Pudong, residents along the South Jiangsu Yangtze River Railway route will soon have the convenient option of taking a high-speed train directly to Pudong Airport or even Shanghai Disneyland.
As the second intercity railway along the Shanghai-Nanjing corridor, the South Jiangsu Yangtze River Railway will in the future serve as a complementary passenger transport route for the Shanghai-Nanjing corridor. It will primarily handle intercity travel demand both within the corridor itself and between the corridor’s key cities and major hubs along the Shanghai-Nanjing axis, as well as between the Pudong region and cities like Nanjing and Zhenjiang. This railway is a vital component of the integrated, multi-dimensional transportation network along the Yangtze River Economic Belt, representing a seamless extension and enhancement of the Shanghai-Hankou-Chengdu Rapid Passenger Corridor. It will also carry long-distance cross-line passengers traveling between the project area, the Pudong region, and regions in central and southwestern China. Ultimately, this railway will play a pivotal role in driving urbanization along its route, fostering industrial upgrades and optimization, and boosting the development of local tourism resources. Together with the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway, the Shanghai-Nanjing Intercity Railway, and the North Yangtze River High-Speed Railway, it will form a high-capacity passenger transport corridor that radiates westward from the Yangtze River Delta region.
